Artist Spotlight – Verena Nelson

Verena Nelson is both my girlfriend and a very talented artist. She’s working with me on two currently postponed projects, and has done a fantastic job on the art side of things. She specializes in realistic and detailed styled pieces, but is very capable of many different styled depending on the needs of the project. She’s quite good at doing a fantastic job on her first try, but with detailed instructions she’s exceptionally good at refining what she came up with to match the exact needs of a piece.

I’ve personally worked with her on two projects, both of varying styles. The first is an extremely realistic point and click adventure game, requiring extremely detailed backgrounds and objects. She completely surprised me with pieces in quality that greatly excelled those of my imagination. Everything was in extremely refined form, and of incredible detail, from lush forests to sunset skies. Although this isn’t the desired style for most game projects, these works do demonstrate an incredibly attention to detail, and a level of quality that’s hard to find elsewhere. The second project we’ve worked on together required a much more traditional game-style art direction. The influences in art direction were greatly derived from the Golden Sun series, which made for a refined GBA-era RPG style. The pieces maintained high detail as found in the realistic art she specializes in, and were definitely of the desired look. Here’s an example piece from that project.

All and all, Verena Nelson is definitely an exceptionally skilled artist, and I’ve been extremely pleased with her work.
